“Where is Eames?” the tall detective wondered as he entered the dark observation room.
“Already inside Interrogation Two with your suspect,” Captain Deakins replied while turning toward Bobby.
“Oh,” Bobby gasped, and peered through the one way mirror, his tongue tasting nervously the corners of his mouth. There sat Alex in front of their perp, bombarding him with more and more questions like a machine gun.
Rubbing his thumb over his lips Bobby was fixed by the two of them. He was startled and winced as Carver came from a dark corner. The ADA laid his palm on Bobby’s shoulder to stop his stepping from one foot to the other.
“Why so stressed, Detective? Your partner nearly convicted Mr. Morningstar. I think she needs just two more minutes and he’ll confess everything.”
“Let’s hope so,” Bobby murmured, and stepped even closer to the glassy wall. His gaze swung between Alex’s back and the reflection of his lips.
Then they came, the words the three men awaited wishfully.
“I did it, okay. I killed her.”
Alex arose, stepped toward the door to wave for an officer who would escort Morningstar to the cell. She closed the door behind her and rested against the frame. The interrogation exhausted her. As she opened her eyes again her gaze fell on the mirror and she noticed what Bobby had tried to see the whole time.
Her lips curled into a grin and she licked with pleasure the chocolate leftovers she’d missed from the ice cream she had shared with Bobby for lunch.
