Review: ‘American Experience’ Traces President Garfield’s Assassination

The description of the 1880 Republican convention in Tuesday night’s “American Experience” on PBS sure sounds like a possible future for both major parties as they choose their 2016 presidential candidates.

The delegates were about evenly divided between Senator James G. Blaine and the former president, Ulysses S. Grant. The two sides held significantly different visions and were not much interested in compromise or unification. But a third guy who wasn’t a candidate gave a speech and changed everything.

“As Garfield was delivering his address to the delegates,” the program’s narration says, “he shouted, ‘And now, gentlemen of the convention, what do we want?’ From the midst of the crowd came an unexpected answer: ‘We want Garfield.’”

The speaker, of course, was James A. Garfield, a congressman from Ohio, and on the convention’s 36th ballot he became the surprise nominee. Might such high drama await at a 2016 convention? The precedent is there to be followed.

For Garfield, though, the convention triumph was good news-awful news, because this “American Experience” is called “Murder of a President,” and its real focus is his assassination just months after he took office. The program, a particularly engrossing installment of the series, portrays Garfield as the John F. Kennedy of his century — a president who embodied a lot of hopes and potential that were never realized.

It’s a story that has some resonance here in an age when much wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few. The factories of the industrial revolution were creating a similar effect in the late 19th century.

“Those factories were channeling unimaginable wealth to a growing aristocracy,” the narration says. “By 1880, the inequalities of capitalism were so vast that they threatened democracy itself.”

Politics was about patronage, the rich and powerful using the system to benefit themselves and their friends. Garfield, we’re told, was seen as someone who might reverse this trend. But all that changed on July 2, 1881, when an unstable hanger-on named Charles Guiteau, apparently thinking he would have a better chance of snagging a patronage job if Vice President Chester A. Arthur were president, shot Garfield twice.

The poor doctoring Garfield received is now the stuff of legend and is thoroughly, somewhat gruesomely detailed here.

“Even by 1880 standards, Garfield was receiving very questionable medical care,” says Candice Millard, whose book “Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President” is the basis for the program.

The oddly named Doctor Willard Bliss — yes, Dr. Doctor — comes off as a villain to rival Guiteau, making bad decisions and barring other physicians from assisting or advising. Garfield died that September.

The re-enactments used to help tell the tale are particularly evocative by “American Experience” standards, thanks to the cast: the Broadway star Shuler Hensley is Garfield; Kathryn Erbe (“Law & Order: Criminal Intent”) is his wife, Lucretia; and Will Janowitz is the creepy Guiteau. Other presidential assassinations have received far more attention, but this one, the program reminds us, had its own particular pathos.

On the morning of July 2, 1881, as Garfield entered the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station, Charles Guiteau shot him twice. The first bullet sliced through the president’s right arm; the second ripped into his back. Guiteau was immediately arrested.

Just five minutes after the shooting, the first doctor reached the station, and within the hour, he would be joined by nine more physicians. As Garfield fought for his life, his medical team – led by the questionable Dr. Doctor Bliss – administered archaic and unsanitary measures, rejecting the method of antisepsis that had been recently discovered by the British surgeon Joseph Lister. Garfield was transported back to the White House and Bliss assumed control, refusing assistance or opinions from other doctors. 

As Garfield’s life hung in the balance, the nation remained riveted to news reports, and thousands of letters of support poured in for the ailing president. Even Alexander Graham Bell, the recent inventor of the telephone, worked around the clock to invent the first metal detector, a device capable of finding the bullet.

But Bliss interfered with the metal detector tests, fearing they would reveal that the bullet was lodged in a place other than where he had indicated. Throughout, Lucretia remained at her husband’s side, advocating on his behalf. She brought in another doctor, Garfield’s cousin, but he too was unable to convince Bliss to change course.

Weakened by pain and riddled with infection, Garfield remained stoic and conscious until the end. On September 5th, he asked to be moved to the seashore in Elberon, New Jersey, where train track was laid directly to the door of his borrowed summer home. With Lucretia and his family by his side, Garfield died on September 19, 1881. 

“The 1880s represent a crucial moment in American history. Garfield’s presidency promised to lead the nation into a new and brighter direction. He grew up in terrible poverty and rose to the Presidency on the sheer force of his personality and intellect and truly believed all Americans should have the same opportunity to succeed,” says American Experience Executive Producer Mark Samels. 

“Garfield had come to represent that vision for which the Union had fought,” says historian Heather Cox Richardson. “Garfield believed that everybody should have equality of opportunity and that the government should help them get that. With the assassination of Garfield, that dream, the dream for which the Union had fought, that vision died.”

Law & Order: SVU Exclusive: Kathryn Erbe Returns for 'Big' Finn Episode

When Law & Order: SVU‘s Finn finds himself in danger this May, an old friend will be around to lend a hand.

Kathryn Erbe‘s Det. Alexandra Eames will make her second appearance of the season in the May 8 episode, executive producer Warren Leight tells TVLine exclusively.

The Law & Order: Criminal Intent mainstay will show up when someone related to Finn’s past as a narcotics officer begins causing trouble for the SVU detective . What happens is “so big, she’s called in,” Leights says, adding that the idea for the episode originated with its star Ice T.

“He said, ‘I saw after that Rollins-and-her-sister episode, the fans really like it when we’re in harm’s way,” the EP recalls. “‘And don’t forget, I used to be a narcotics officer. There’s got to be a lot of people who want me dead.’”

Hip-hop artist 2 Chainz also appears in the episode as “someone Finn dealt with in the past,” Leight says. “There’s a lot of bad blood from Finn’s past involved in it.”

Emilio Rivera (Sons of Anarchy), Yul Vasquez (Magic City) and Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull) also appear in the episode.

I'm excited for Kathyrn Erbe to come to SVU. What can you tell me about her visit? - Jessica
ADAM: Although Erbe's reprising her role as Detective Eames from Criminal Intent, she is now working with Homeland Security as part of a joint task force investigating terrorists. She'll meet up with Benson & Co. when the terrorists are connected to a sex-trafficking ring. Executive producer Warren Leight (who ran CI for several seasons) says he was struck by the characters' similarities. "These are two women who had long-term partnerships with difficult guys," Leight says. "These are two people who've been underestimated - who've worked just as hard, just as long -and people don't quite get how good they are." But those people will have ample opportunity to see what they've been missing: Leight promises Erbe will be back at least once later in the season.

I would love to know when they film Kathryn's episode. I assume somewhere in the next weeks. The two hour double opener episode was wrapped a few days ago and I think they are now filming the third episode. Ep #4 will be next.

P.S. yeah to at least one more SVU episode with Kathryn. It's so great to get Alex back.

Law & Order: SVU is welcoming a familiar face to the precinct this fall: Former Law & Order: Criminal Intent detective Kathryn Erbe. TVLine has learned that the actress will reprise her CI role of Alexandra Eames during SVU’s upcoming 14th season.

Det. Eames, now working for a joint City/Federal Homeland Security Task Force, crosses paths with the SVU squad when their investigation of a sex trafficking ring uncovers a connection to terrorists. Erbe, who spent a decade on Criminal Intent, is currently booked for one SVU episode (airdate TBD), but word is she will likely be back for more later in the season.

SVU‘s new season premieres on Sept. 26.

I know I didn't post very regularly anymore. I'm busy at the LJ and the tvrealm community. There are two big challenges which will end very soon. I also signed up for two new 20 in 20 icon rounds (Mark Salling for guys20in20 and Kate Beckinsale for luck20in20). I hope when I finished these projects I'll spend again more time for Lovely Kathryn. I have many more idea.

But I hope all Kathryn fans of the New York area visited the Big Apple Film Festival and watched Mother's House at the weekend.


Today The Consoler (der Tröster) will have it's German tv premiere. I badly need to show you the vox opening credits of season 10. I read that the quotes of the first episodes were good even though vox didn't advertise the final season very much. I saw a few nice clips but hadn't a chance to record it. Maybe today?


In the meantime three amazing drawings I found at deviantart.com. I always wished to inherit the talent of my dad, but my sister was the lucky one. Unbelievable what some people can draw...
