Last Week Tonight: Civil Forfeiture

I love Kathryn so much. Watch the last 4 minutes of Last Week Tonight: Civil Forfeiture of October 6th. They got the Alex clothing very close. Gosh, I miss Criminal Intent.

This week’s topic on the brilliant Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is civil forfeiture, which “sounds like a Gwyneth Paltrow euphemism for divorce” but is actually the method by which law enforcement can seize people’s property without them being charged with a crime. As has become the expectation, Oliver provided a thorough overview of the situation. He particularly focused on the absurd concept that it’s not the people who are on trial but their stuff. All of this led him to conceive of a hilarious new television show: Law & Order: Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit. Starring real-life Law & Order alumni Jeff Goldblum, Robert John Burke, Kathryn Erbe, and John Fiore, the trailer featured such wonderful absurdities as Kathryn Erbe handcuffing a sofa and Jeff Goldblum playing bad cop while interrogating a pile of money.

Oliver also touched on the protests in Hong Kong (surprisingly polite!), the elections in Brazil (surprisingly crazy!), and the 2022 Winter Olympics (unsurprisingly unpopular!). Turns out, no one wants to host the Winter Olympics except for Kazakhstan and China, so Oliver decided to offer up the Last Week Tonight studio as another option. For some reason, they didn’t make that video available on YouTube (even though it featured the unicorn, the space gecko, and not one but two mini-fridges of Coca-Cola products) but if that changes, we’ll post it here.

Yesterday was an amazing day. Blanca sent me a personalized Ode to Joy program with Kathryn's sign and greetings. I also got a beautiful Easter card by Alberto and a little addition was the TV Guide edition with Norman Reedus on it. JIPPY!

I also saw a tweet by the Artie Lange Show, saying Kathryn was a guest on Monday. After a little research I found:

It's a big overview of her career, talking about Soap Operas (better money than library), What About Bob (smoking and Bill Murray leaving the set), Criminal Intent and her relationship to Vincent. I love that she said it was like a marriage. Eames' eye-rolling was built around Goren. She also talks about getting older, her daughter with her own show biz projects and Ode to Joy.

Elevator Pitch: Dan is 33 and trapped by almost everything. Reeling from the death of his sister, Dan’s nihilism has smothered his passion as a playwright as his mindless consumption pushes him towards the edge.

A glimmer of hope emerges when he's reunited with Kate (a beautiful but troubled childhood friend), yet his desperate search for freedom continues to submerge him into an odyssey of self-destruction.

What he ultimately finds in his darkest hour, however, is illumination beyond his wildest comprehension. But can he fully metabolize his experience? Does he deserve it? And how is it relevant to the world ... ?

Our intention as filmmakers is to make not only a fiercely entertaining story, but also a transformative film that has the potential to enliven the awareness of viewers. We recognize the potential of cinema to uplift, inspire, and catalyze a profound examination of our human experience so that going to the movies becomes a consciousness-expanding event.

Actors Make Videos in Push for Campaign Finance Reform

ALBANY — It may not have the political sex appeal of fighting climate change, ending the war on drugs or thwarting hydrofracking, but the issue of campaign finance reform is getting a little celebrity spin this week, compliments of a series of Web videos being released on Wednesday.

“I’m Alec Baldwin with a message for politicians in New York,” says the actor (and rumored New York City mayoral aspirant) in his video. “It’s time to stop talking about cleaning up Albany, and start doing it.”

Mr. Baldwin’s video is one of four that have been recorded in recent days by actors with ties to the city, including Jason Alexander (of “Seinfeld” fame); Kathleen Turner (an experienced Broadway actress); and Kathryn Erbe, who was a regular on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

The release of the videos comes a day after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo unveiled a bill that would introduce a public financing system for state elections that would be similar to the one in place in New York City. That legislation — part of a broader plan from the governor to reform elections — will have a hard time passing in the State Senate, which is controlled, in part, by Republicans opposed to public money being used for elections.

Hence, it seems, the celebrity charm offensive.

“I remember that old ad campaign, ‘I Love NY,’” Mr. Alexander says in his video. “Well I did, and I do. And that’s why I’m hoping Albany will get its act together and pass comprehensive campaign finance reform.” He adds that the state could “set the trend for the whole country, which is exactly what New York should be doing.”

The videos are the first in what will most likely be a series of personality-driven pitches, with other stars recording ads in the near future, according to Fair Elections for New York, a coalition that is coordinating the campaign. Each ad has a different script, but a similar, stern tagline — “Don’t come home without it” — something that sounds particularly serious when it’s coming from a gravelly grande dame like Ms Turner.

“It’s time Albany got cleaned up,” she says. “Pass Fair Elections for New York. And don’t come home without it.”

We take a look at one of the most significant political events of the 20th century -- Richard Nixon's notorious "Checkers speech." It is the subject of the new play by Douglas McGrath, "Checkers," now at the Vineyard Theatre. Our guests are playwright McGrath, the show's director Terry Kinney, plus actors Anthony LaPaglia and Kathryn Erbe, who play Richard and Pat Nixon respectively in this drama based on the events surrounding Nixon's 1952 televised address to the nation. In it, Nixon not only defended his reputation, but more importantly, pioneered the use of television as an effective political tool.

Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.

The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)

I saw this photo of Richard Nixon's sign change on tumblr today.
I send a note with the pic to Vineyard Theater via twitter that I thought of them and Checkers in the second I saw the sings. I also asked, if there is a chance that they recorded the play once so everyone could get a chance to watch Kathryn on stage as Pat Nixon.
Unfortunately they didn't do this, but they pointed on their 30th Anniversary Video. The Checkers participants have also contributed in the campaign. There are also tiny parts of Kathryn and Anthony acting on stage. Enjoy!
