Kathryn joined the new indie film project of Mike Roma: Dating My Mother. The filming will start next week (August 22) in New Jersey.

Kathryn Erbe, Kathy Najimy, James Le Gros, Paul Iacono and newcomer Patrick Reilly will star in the new comedy “Dating My Mother.” Shooting will start Aug. 22 in New Jersey.

Mike Roma is directing from his own screenplay, which explores the intimate and sometimes tumultuous relationship between a single mother, played by Erbe, and her gay son (Reilly). Together they navigate the world of online dating as they search for their versions of “Mr. Right.”

Le Gros co-stars as Erbe’s love interest, Najimy as her neighbor, and Iacono plays the potential boyfriend of Reilly’s character.

“Dating My Mother” is Roma’s directorial feature debut, following his web series “Danny the Manny.” The film is produced by Ashley Hillis, and executive produced by Roma and Reilly.

Erbe starred for 10 seasons of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

She is repped by Innovative Artists; Le Gros is with Industry Entertainment; Najimy is represented by Abrams Artists Agency, Iacono is repped by Michael Einfeld Management and Reilly is with 44 West Entertainment.

In Dating My Mother, a single mom (Law & Order: Criminal Intent’s Kathryn Erbe) and her gay son (newcomer Patrick Reilly) are both on the hunt for Mr. Right. 

We’ve got high hopes for the film, which starts shooting next week: In addition to its talentent leads, Dating My Mother features James Le Gros (Girls) as a love interest for Erbe’s character, out actor Paul Iacono (The Hard Times of RJ Berger) as a potential boyfriend for her son, and gay fave Kathy Najimy as the family’s neighbor.

The perfect complement to Vincent D’Onofrio’s character in Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Robert Goren) was his partner in crime (no pun intended) Alexandra Eames, played by the unique Kathryn Erbe. 

She calls herself a “blue collar actor”, but in reality she’s so much more than that. Kathryn began her career as a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and starred in some critical-acclaimed plays, A Streetcar Named Desire and The Grapes of Wrath among them.

I remember watching her in a movie called Rich in Love. It is one of those films featuring some true gifted actors, not exactly “movie stars”: Ethan Hawke, Piper Laurie, Albert Finney and Kathryn herself. It was such a great experience, as Erbe’s portrayal of Lucille Odom displays enough expertise while allows you to take a glimpse of her work ethic. 

However, every great actor finds a way to expand their own horizons by taking the most challenging roles available for them. In some cases, it doesn´t necessarily implies earning millions of dollars or having your name all over the place in showbiz TV shows on a daily basis. Actually, it takes so much more than that.

This is exactly what Kathryn Erbe did in Oz. Shirley Bellinger, a woman in death row, was the perfect character to showcase her skills, and great enough to disturb the audience and got them thinking for a change about the nature of evil and the darkest side of mental illnesses. 

Kathryn Erbe was completely exposed as an actress both physically and emotionally, during every scene of Oz in which she appears. Bellinger is a mother who drowned her own daughter by sinking her car in a river. She's so disconnected from the real world that uses kinky, emotionless sex as the only way to express her feelings. 

The execution scene of Shirley Bellinger shows how great Kathryn Erbe is. No wonder why she stated later in an interview that after this character, she knows how to check out and not be affected by all the stuff she portrays on screen. 

The cold murderer and evil mother beg for forgiveness just seconds before being hanged, but the law was stronger than her survival instincts. The whole sequence is extremely frightening and Kathryn’s performance is raw, wild and perfect. 

Fortunately, we will always have Alexandra Eames, her most memorable character, to remind us that true friendship lasts forever. Kathryn worked very hard and along with Vincent D’Onofrio endured long hours of filming to create such a memorable TV show. Worth the effort, as she embodied a tough and determined detective able to solve the most tricky cases with the help of her brainy partner Robert Goren.

Even if the show never turned into any cheesy comedy à-la Bones to appeal to a wider audience, Kathryn and Vincent are still the perfect TV couple who gave us the best of their talent for almost a decade.

Pretty much as Vincent himself, Kathryn Erbe is a real actress whose passion for what she does goes beyond shallow recognition by the media. She knows exactly where she stands both as a woman and artist... and that’s all that matters.

Kensho Update

My Love from Ground Zero Review

A few days ago I got an email of Matt Cohan with the chance to watch Love from Ground Zero in a pre-screening for a review here at Lovely Kathryn.

I was very honored and said yes. I always wanted to see this Kathryn movie. Now with the re-release of the movie everyone can get her and his hands on a copy.

Always when I thought about this movie and especially the title, I thought it is somehow related to 9/11. But you need to keep in mind that the movie was made in 1998. The explanation of the title will be solved within the 102 minutes of the road movie at a very interesting location.

We follow Eric (Simon Baker), Sam (Jacqueline McKenzie), Walter (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and their yellow station wagon from New York City to the University of Montana. Their friend/husband Henry (the beautiful voice of Sam Roberts) died after a short illness and the three strangers follow Henry's way west he made in colleague as freshman over 10 years ago. They have four postcards as lead. Within the 3,5 days of the ride Eric, Sam and Walter bond, fight, love, cry, dance and meet friends and family of Henry.

I really liked how the movie makers include Henry to Eric, Sam and Walter and make the quartet complete. We hear him read the postcards. We see old super 8 video sequences with a yellow touch of the landscape filmed out of a running car. First I felt odd to see this, but subtracting 10 years from 1998 sent us to the late Eighties with no HD cell phone cameras near and far.

The music is great. A good mix of funk and sing a song style.

On the down side there is an odd focus on people peeing and sleeping outside. We get the mandatory eagle flying over high mountains. Plus ugly wardrobe of all characters. Example: Sam's underwear and Walter's astro shirt. I bet the makers want to tell us something through the closes, but I don't get it yet.

Kathryn appears at 1:06. I knew Kathryn has beautiful eyes, but it is breathtaking how good this movie focus on them. She has a few truths for the main characters they have to deal with.

The movie has several really powerful lines, a funny Moon town and great landscape filming which make it worth to watch. Plus it is a part to complete your Kathryn's Movie collection.

"Kill for Me," an independent thriller tracking an ex-con's race to save his son, is filming in Amsterdam now through Aug. 10. 

According to producer Benjamin Bickham, the film is set in present-day New York state — though not Amsterdam specifically — and features a cast that includes television actor Bailey Chase of "Saving Grace" and film, stage and TV presence Dylan Baker of "Happiness," "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" and an Emmy-winning guest stint on "The Good Wife."

In "Kill for Me," Chase plays Charlie, who is at the tail end of a 20-year sentence. Baker plays Hank, a correction officer whose life Charlie saves during an altercation with another prisoner. On the day of Charlie's release, Bickham explained, the other inmate issues a threat. "He says, 'Don't you have a son on the outside?' And he says, 'Well, I have people on the outside, too.' And he says, 'You'd better find him first, or he's gonna be dead.'" After that, "It's basically a ticking clock. Gotta find him first." 

Written by Raymond Kwok, the film is being directed by Tim McCann, whom Bickham described as "a very dark, gritty, thriller-genre director." Among the other films the pair have worked on together is "The Aftermath," which follows an addict who risks his life trying to return a necklace to his estranged wife. 

On Thursday, the shooting was at Sweet's East End Repair at 196 West Main St. and Herk's Tavern at 65 Bridge St. The filmmakers chose to shoot in and around Amsterdam "for a couple reasons," Bickham said. For starters: Montgomery County offers an additional 10 percent tax credit for film productions beyond the state's 30 percent.

They also liked the older, grungier look of some of its buildings, he said. "Amsterdam has some great industrial sites, and, you know, you can spend millions of dollars trying to build things that look that way. And we're here, and they're free."

Aside from locations in Amsterdam, "Kill for Me" will also shoot scenes in Schenectady and Albany. The movie, budgeted at "just under half a million dollars," will likely spend from eight months to a year in post-production. The filmmakers are working on distribution plans, Bickham said.

Movie Filming In The Capital Region

The shooting of a small-budget, independent film in Amsterdam is exoected to generate about $300,000 in economic activity, according to the film's producer.

The movie is called Kill For Me, and stars Bailey Chase in the lead role of a man who spends twenty years in prison then gets out to try to save his son, who had been threatened while his father was locked up. Written by Raymond Kwok, the filming takes advantage of some of Amsterdam's old factories and less-than-beautiful parts of the city. Kwok is also a producer on the project and said he wanted to make the film in New York, partly to take advantage of the state's tax credits offered to filmmakers.

The filming is about half finished. Producer Benjamin Brant Bickham, whose brother lives in Niskayuna, said it's not clear yet how nor when the movie might open, suggesting it might first be seen on the festival circuit. He said it's being made with a budget of about $500,000 and a crew of around forty.

Studying Bailey Chase's twitter and facebook looks like Kill for Me is filmed in Albany, Amsterdam, Mt McGregor and Amsterico, NY from July 15 and still going on. I can't find anything about Kathryn's roll yet. Nevertheless, yeah a new Kathryn project!!!

'Worst Friends' Indie Comedy Finds North American Distributor

Level 33 "Worst Friends" Level 33 will release the film from Ralph Arend of "CollegeHumor Originals."

Level 33 Entertainment has acquired the comedy Worst Friends for distribution in North America.

The film centers on prankster Jake (Richard Tanne), who is hit by a car and only has his childhood friend Sam (Noah Barrow) to take care of him. His recovery is aided by physical therapist Lily (Cody Horn) and Sam until Sam's high school crush Zoe (Kristen Connolly) moves back to town.

It will be released Sept. 16 on VOD and DVD with select theatrical screenings.

The comedy was directed and written by CollegeHumor Originals director Ralph Arend from a story by Arend, Barrow and Tanne. The three of them produced — Tanne through his October County Films banner — as did Erika Hampson.

“This film was a labor of love to all involved, and we’re thrilled to partner with a dynamic company like Level 33 in helping it reach the widest audience possible,” Tanne said in a statement.
