We have to say, last night was a pretty amazing way to end the 2016 Selected Shorts year. HUGE thanks to Billy Porter, Kathryn Erbe, Jane Kaczmarek and our host (and reader) Paul Giamatti. Honestly, it's impossible to say who was the favorite, they were all so great. And a special thanks to The New York Review of Books who were great partners on this night. We're back on stage in January with a night hosted by Richard Price.

Selected Shorts On Stage
Paul Giamatti Curates Stories from The New York Review of Books
December 7, 2016 at 7:30 pm
Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space
Between takes on the set of Billions, Paul Giamatti will
sift through stories from the collections of Auden, Chekhov, Saki, du
Maurier, Hardwick, and more to present us with an evening of fiction
from what Oliver Sacks called “one of the great institutions of
intellectual life here or anywhere.”
Performers include Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle), Billy Porter (Kinky Boots), and Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent).
Produced in cooperation with the NYRB Classics
The NYRB Classics series is dedicated to
publishing an eclectic mix of fiction and non-fiction from different
eras and times and of various sorts. The series includes nineteenth
century novels and experimental novels, reportage and belles lettres,
tell-all memoirs and learned studies, established classics and cult
favorites, literature high, low, unsuspected, and unheard of. NYRB
Classics are, to a large degree, discoveries, the kind of books that
people typically run into outside of the classroom and then remember for
life.
Selected Shorts is produced
by Symphony Space and broadcast on more than 150 stations around the
country. The Selected Shorts podcast consistently ranks as one of the
most popular podcasts on iTunes. The series began in 1985 and enjoys
sold-out performances to this day. Selected Shorts was conceived with a
simple premise: take great stories by well-known and emerging writers
and have them performed by terrific actors of stage and screen.
Featuring stories around a lively theme, the favorite works of a guest
author, or a special collaboration, each Selected Shorts event is a
unique night of literature in performance.
Premium tickets are available and include a $50 tax-deductible donation to Symphony Space.

to press notes. “This documentary play moves past the noise of the
current political climate and focuses on the people who receive and

submitted to the 1 in 3 Campaign, this play is soulful, funny, and at
times challenging. Remarkably Normal reveals the stories behind the statistics.”

I don't know if Kathryn found the time to join Steppenwolf Theatre Company's 40th anniversary gala at May 14. But her ex-husband Terry Kinney took Maeve with him. You can find a cute photo of both here in the gallery.

Kathryn at One on One with Steve Adubato & THE FATHER gets One Week Extension
Kathryn gave an interview yesterday. Let's hope the One on One with Steve Adubato people will publish it online soon.
Frank Langella-Led THE FATHER get One Week Extension at Manhattan Theatre Club
Manhattan Theatre Club's American premiere of The Father, the new play by Molière Award winner Florian Zeller, with a translation by two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Hampton (Sunset Boulevard, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, God of Carnage) and directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt, Outside Mullingar, City of Conversation) will extend by one week at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street). The limited engagement, which opened on April 14 to critical raves, has been extended through Sunday, June 19.
Frank Langella received his seventh Tony nomination for his role in The Father and was awarded the 2016 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play. Langella is also nominated for the 2016 Drama Desk Award and will be honored at the 2016 Drama League Awards for this performance. The Father has been nominated for the 2016 Tony Award, Drama League Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Play.
Below is a sample of what New York critics had to say about this new production starring three-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee Frank Langella joined by Tony Award nominee Kathryn Erbe ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent," The Speed of Darkness), Brian Avers(Rock 'n' Roll, The Lieutenant of Inishmore), Charles Borland (A Man for All Seasons), Drama Desk Award nominee Hannah Cabell (Pumpgirl at MTC, Grounded), and Kathleen McNenny(Fish in the Dark, An Enemy of the People at MTC).
"Powerful and darkly humorous. Playwright Florian Zeller is a rising star." -Joe Dziemianowicz, Daily News
"Frank Langella gives a must-see performance." -Jesse Green, New York Magazine
"Frank Langella, with that sonorous voice and commanding presence, not only holds the stage, he owns it. When you're not hanging on his every line and gesture, you may stop for a moment to try and study how he does it. But don't bother because his performances are seamless and when he slips into a role, the actor evaporates leaving no trace." - Roma Torre, NY1
"Frank Langella Devastates. Under the confident direction of Doug Hughes, Florian Zeller's The Father has aspects of both a thriller and an absurdist comedy, and something more poignant than either." -Alexis Soloski, The Guardian
Now 80 years old, André (Frank Langella) was once a tap dancer. He lives with his daughter Anne (Kathryn Erbe) and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter Anne lives in London with her new lover, Pierre? The thing is, he is still wearing his pajamas, and he can't find his watch. He is starting to wonder if he's losing control.
The creative team for The Father includes: Scott Pask (scenic design), Catherine Zuber(costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design), Fitz Patton (original music and sound design), and Jim Steinmeyer (illusion consultant).
Lead support for The Father has been provided by MTC's Producing Fund Partner, Andrew Martin-Weber.

The Father on Broadway
The Father, Kathryn's new play, opened yesterday.
The Father is a contemporary work about dealing with Alzheimer's.
Led by three-time Tony winner and Oscar nominee Frank Langella, the American premiere of Florian Zeller's The Father starts previews at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on March 22. Translated by two-time Tony and Oscar winner Christopher Hampton and helmed by Tony winner Doug Hughes, the limited engagement will officially open on April 14.
Kathleen McNenny (Enemy of the People) will replace the previously announced Liz Wisan in the role of Woman in the production, which runs through June 12. The cast also includes Tony nominee Kathryn Erbe, Brian Avers, Charles Borland and Hannah Cabell.
The Father looks inside the mind of André (Langella), a retired tap dancer living with his adult daughter Anne and her husband. Or is he a retired engineer receiving a visit from Anne who has moved away with her boyfriend? Why do strangers keep turning up in his room? And where has he left his watch?
Zeller's drama earned him a Molière Award, France's most prestigious theater honor, in 2014. The Father concludes its West End return on March 26.
