Today will start the rehearsals of Nikolai and the Others with Kathryn Erbe as Natasha Nabokov.
Natasha Nabokov: 40s. Nikolai’s first wife; they have been divorced for years. Russian minor nobility; before the Revolution, she had been a “Princess”. Balanchine’s other great platonic woman-friend; his confidante and go-between with his love affairs. She is now engaged to Karpov, someone well below her status. She is desperately settling.
Plot: In Nikolai and the Others playwright Richard Nelson (Some Americans Abroad, Two Shakespearean Actors) imagines the relationships between Balanchine and Stravinsky, their friends, lovers, wives and ex-wives, partners, supporters and dancers (including Maria Tallchief and Nicholas Magallanes), at the time of their historic collaboration on the ballet Orpheus.
Later that year, Orpheus would be the spectacular inaugural production of the newly formed New York City Ballet. With this in mind, the play also explores the controversial ways American art and artistic institutions were funded at the outset of the Cold War -- including the subtle hand of the State Department in the post-war cultural scene.
The play will act at:
Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater
Lincoln Center
150 West 65th Street
New York, NY 10023
Runtime: April 04th – June 16th. The Opening Night is May 06th
